چکیده

Aim of the study: The authors present a prospective histomorphological study of middle ear ossicles, harvested from cholesteatomous ears, to evaluate for presence of residual cholesteatoma after mechanical treatment and short-time autoclaving. Materials and methods: Sixty ossicles were used as specimens in this study. The ossicles were grouped as follows: Group A ossicles stripped and burred using a fine diamond burr under microscopic control. Group B ossicles autoclaved for 4 min at 134°C after mechanical burring under microscopic control. Results: In group A, 30 ossicles were histologicaly examined after mechanical treatment. The residual disease was found in one badly eroded ossicle. In group B, 30 ossicles were histologicaly examined after mechanical treatment and autoclaving. That treatment eliminated cholesteatoma in all cases. The difference of results in these two treatment methods was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Authors recommend using mechanical cleaning in cases of mildly eroded ossicles. In cases of badly eroded ossicles authors recommend to either apply a combination of mechanical and autoclaving treatment. The study proved that 4 minutes of autoclaving at 134°C after mechanical cleaning provides safe bone autografts. © Versita Sp. z o.o.

Anatomical and morphometrical study of middle ear ossicles in 2 to 3-month-old Makouei sheep fetuses

The middle ear ossicles are important due to transmission of sound to the inner ear leading to sound understanding. The aim of present study was to determine the anatomical and morphometrical aspects of middle ear ossicles in Makouei sheep fetuses. For this experimental study, eight sheep fetuses at the age of 2 to 3 months were provided from public slaughterhouse; their middle ear ossicles wer...

CLASSIFICATION OF CONGENITAL MIDDLE AND EXTERNAL EAR MALFORMATIONS: CT STUDY

The authors used high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) for studying 52 congenitally malformed ears in 45 children between five and 10 years of age. In six children the malformations were bilateral. The malformations clinically manifested as microtia, atresia of the external auditory canal and conductive deafness. Analyzing anatomical details and pathological changes on HRCT axial sec...

Visualization of Middle Ear Ossicles in Elder Subjects with Ultra-short Echo Time MR Imaging

PURPOSE To evaluate the visualization of middle ear ossicles by ultra-short echo time magnetic resonance (MR) imaging at 3T in subjects over 50 years old. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty ears from 30 elder patients that underwent surgical or interventional treatment for neurovascular diseases were included (ages: 50-82, median age: 65; 10 men, 20 women). Patients received follow-up MR imaging inc...

Morphology and morphometrical study of hamster middle ear bones

The objective of the current study was to determine the anatomical features of the auditory ossicles inhamster. Twenty temporal bones from 10 adult hamsters, weighing 275-300 g were used. After dissectingthem, the features of the ossicles were assessed with an ocular micrometer and photographed by astereomicroscope. Finally, all data were evaluated and analysed using the Sigma Statt software. T...

OBJECTIVE To investigate whether autologous ossicles can be safely used in ossicular reconstruction in cholesteatoma surgery after attempting cholesteatoma removal under the operating microscope. STUDY DESIGN A prospective fine-section histological study of formalin-stored ossicles, harvested from cholesteatomatous ears, to evaluate for existence of residual cholesteatoma after surface diseas...
